For the city of Amsterdam together with Team IJbrug CS we developed a design solution for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge spanning the IJ river next to the central train station. The location of the bridge is where most people currently cross the IJ using ferries and is well connected to bicycle networks on both sides of the river. This location proved to be a design challenge due to complex and opposing stakeholder needs and demands. We payed special attention to waterway authority demands in this design: no obstacles due to a large free span (ca. 200 m). Both sides of the cable stayed bridge construction can rotate and swing open to allow passage of large cruise ships.
